Ginger Snaps film review

It would be easy to give Ginger Snaps extra credit for its title. A perfectly concise summation of the film’s central story – it’s about Ginger and she indeed does snap – while also showing off a wry sense of humour with its pun on the cookie of the same name. It also works on the senses to make allusions about the genre it modernises. Perhaps the best title of a werewolf movie I’ve ever come across. It beats the heck out of the uninspired Wolf or the convoluted An American Werewolf In London. And this film deserves an edgy title to go along with its unique tale of teenage angst set against the pale blue light of a full moon. [See the full review here]

Yes, I do see them as companion pieces. I look forward to the day when a theatre plays them as a double feature. There are so many similarities between Mickey’s character and the Nina character in Black Swan – they are both artists that use their bodies to express themselves and they do a tremendous amount of damage to themselves in the process, except one is the highest art, and one is the lowest art, if you can call it an art. Black Swan - new UK release date

Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel, will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on Friday 21st January, 2011.

A bit of background:
Harry Potter is an orphan. His parents (two of the world’s best wizards) were killed by evil Lord Voldemort but when Voldemort tried to kill Harry as well, his killing curse rebounded and reduced the evil wizard to a weak, half-life like form. Voldemort then disappears for a decade.

Harry is left to be raised by his despicable Uncle and Aunt, the wizarding world believing that Voldemort is gone forever.

At the age of 11, children with wizard powers are invited to a special school – Hogwarts – to train and learn about their special gift. It is here that Harry meets Hermione and Ron, the two children who would become his best friends and closest allies in the battle against evil.

Hammer is remembered today for its horror films, which is to be expected since the genre produced their most iconic films and characters, but is did start out making dramas and comedies, and also period-action films. Horror movies didn’t even register as half their output. As a matter of fact, only 1/8th of Hammer films were horror, and one of their most famous and appreciated films was the comedy On The Buses.
